Women Violence

Violence against women is any type of act that results in physical, sexual, and mental harm to women in a society. The roots of women violence are connected to abuse of power, gender inequality, and harmful norms. The violence encompasses physical, sexual, and psychological violence that occurs in a family or a society.  According to the United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women: ‘The term violence against women means any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life.’ The women violence includes many types.

The various types of women violence include domestic violence ( emotional, physical, and sexual), Femicide and Honor killing, sexual violence ( sexual harassment, rape), Human trafficking, and female genital mutilation. There are number of factors that participate equally in promoting violence against women in a society and family. A few of these causes are listed below;

·         Low levels of education

·         Child maltreatment

·         Gender inequality in different societies

·         Alcoholic usage

·         Antisocial Personality disorder

·         Marital Discord

·         Sexual Purity belief

·         Weak legal system and many more

There must be a strategy to keep women violence contained. A number of international agencies are trying their best to advocate women rights and raise voice for women. In 2019, WHO and UN Women with endorsement from 12 other UN and bilateral agencies published RESPECT women – a framework for preventing violence against women aimed at policy makers. While different agencies are trying to advocate women rights on their own, governing bodies should also take it under their notice and proper legal forums should be established. These forums should help women who are being oppressed and their legal pleas should be heard. On the other hand, health sector can be proved most handy in all this scenario. Whatever the cause may be, women violence is a curse and it must be stopped.
